A good friend of mine, Stephanie Adamowicz (Founder of AllArtIsContemporary), is curating a show that opens this Wednesday in NYC entitled, “Mirrored Thoughts/Spaces Between” – it’ll be at Spattered Columns at Art Connects New York. The show’s going to run from Wednesday, February 16 – March 22 and while I’m not sure if I’ll make it down to check it out I wanted to share an artist who is in the show that I love, Carrie Pollack.
The above, Weave 1, is a digital print on newsprint that reminds me of the really loose spun yarn I bought from Textura last year – my mom is finally using it to try to recreate a fancy sweater she saw at Barneys the other day.
This piece, entitled Spider is another digital print on newsprint, albeit, much larger in scale – 30×60 inches. As I work with a printer company at my day job I’m pretty fascinated that these large scale printers can print on such a fine material without it getting a paper jam.
Gold leaf on canvas makes up this piece, entitled, “Present 1.” As Stephanie puts it, Carrie’s “textured gold leaf canvases create a tension between exposed canvas and gilded surface that expose viewers’ senses of vulnerability and loss.”
Present 3 is event less covered than Present 1 in terms of the quantity of gold leaf. I’m not sure if it’s a symptom of the leafing process or a necessity for it even, but the loose canvas has a neat effect. I have done a lot of leafing in my day and know that the surface it’s applied to makes a great deal of difference. It does make me a little nervous to see this gold on so loose a base.
I love this Stripes 2 work – it reminds me of lots of the ticking I’ve been looking at for the new apartment. Anyway, great to come across Carrie’s work through Stephanie’s email this morning – I’m sure the opening will be fabulous! Congrats!
